We’re Expanding Our Dementia Awareness and Education with Industry Leader Teepa Snow

Teepa Snow is a dementia-care education specialist with a background in occupational therapy and close to 40 years of clinical practice. She does a special kind of experiential training called multi-modal learning, which helps build knowledge so that everyone involved in support or care, including the people living with dementia, understands the how and why behind changing behaviors, emotions, interactions, and reactions.

Ultimately, her goal is to help people build their skill sets. Her GEMS® State Model for understanding progression and change in ability, combined with her Positive Approach® to Care (PAC) Skills, form practical and effective strategies and techniques for individuals and agencies seeking to optimize care and support for those living with dementia and their care partners. These user-friendly approaches provide guidance and leadership to national efforts to promote best practices. PAC is collaboratively working to change the culture of dementia care, one mind at a time in over 30 countries worldwide.

A Message from Teepa Snow

Over the past 8 years, I have collaborated with the Pines of Sarasota Education and Training Institute to produce and record specialty workshops. These sessions have been transformed into DVD format and made available around the world. I’ve created additional education based on what you need to fulfill your commitment to providing the best possible care.

Questions About The New Content

How could I have 26 new content areas?

Because dementia is complicated and there are so many facets and variations to consider:

  • Recognizing early signs and signals of brain changes
  • Understanding the effects to the body by changes in brain structure and chemical function
  • Navigating challenging behaviors
  • Creating meaningful activities
  • How to develop the necessary skills in order to best function as a care partner to the person living with dementia (PLwD)

And these are just the tip of the iceberg! Dementia affects people in different way. Providing additional educational courses on dementia is critical to ensuring that your staff is meeting the needs of each individual.

How in the world could a few hours of training ever prepare us to care for people living with various forms of dementia?

These courses will provide you with the awareness and education needed to understand an individual’s experience with dementia and follow them throughout the course of the condition. They also include training on providing assistance with multitude of tasks, filling days with value and meaning, and helping family members and the public service sector, as well as ourselves.

As you take a look at all the new options, think about who you are supporting, who provides challenges for you, what the challenges are, who else might be involved or might help, and THEN pick one course and see what it might offer you. Consider breaking your training into shorter segments and involve others. Maybe try a Lunch and Learn format?

Want to know more about your options with the new content?

Mouth care has become a very hot topic recently – we have a course for that!

If spiritual care is also on your radar, we have another course that offers ideas for spiritual support from beginning to end.

Maybe you are curious about the impact environments have on people living with dementia and those providing care. There’s a course for that as well.

So, check out all the possibilities and give something a try. You won’t know what else you need until you get started.

As for me, I remain committed to helping improve awareness, increase knowledge, and build skills, one mind at a time.
