Relias Learning Releases 14 New Courses For Direct Support Professionals

New online courses increase learner motivation and engagement among direct support professionals serving those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

CARY, NC, November 7, 2014  Relias Learning, the leader in cloud-based compliance and professional development training for the health and human services markets announced today the release of 14 new courses for direct support professionals (DSPs). These 14 new courses are tied to their new “Focused Learning” initiative—intended to provide DSPs with training based on adult education best practices.

“DSPs have a direct impact on improving the quality of life for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  By ensuring they are trained on proven techniques and the latest practices enables them to give the greatest level of care,” explains Jim Triandiflou, CEO of Relias Learning. “Our Focused Learning content uses adult learning principles to help DSPs gain and apply knowledge that leads to success in their jobs, as well as success for their agency.”

Relias’ Focused Learning initiative uses the traditional ways DSPs learn to identify 6 core elements of a successful training environment:
•    Behavioral change-focused content
•    Scenario-based training
•    Constructive feedback
•    Emotional and visual impact
•    Enhanced interaction through gamification

These elements were the framework in developing new courses—which take topics such as service planning, meal time, positive behavior support—and present them in a more engaging, interactive format. By presenting training in a more interactive setting, DSP’s can take a more active role in the education they receive. This ultimately increases retention and improves the practical application of skills learned.

“We are continuously investing to improve the way DSP supervisors train their staff,” says Jim. “By incorporating training best practices in to our courses, we are ensuring our clients working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities receive the most engaging, impactful content.”
