Relias Press Room Relias Releases Behavorial Health Simulation Course, “In Session: Suicide Assessment and Intervention for Adults” Published: December 12, 2019 Simulation course offers real-world learning environment for behavioral health professionals. MORRISVILLE, NC, December 12, 2019 – Relias, a trusted partner to more than 10,000 clients around the world, has released a new simulation-based course, “In Session: Suicide Assessment and Intervention for Adults.” The course will provide learners with the ability to apply critical thinking, knowledge, and skills in simulated clinical sessions and to real world experiences. A course preview can be viewed here. “This simulation offers learners and clinicians an opportunity to experience a realistic clinical scenario and to practice necessary clinical skills in assessment and intervention with a high-risk client experiencing suicidal ideation,” said Maria Samot, Vice President of Content at Relias. “Simulations help bridge the gap between learning and skill application and allow clinicians to practice their skills in a safe environment.” In 2017, over 47,000 Americans died by suicide according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that there were an additional 1.4 million attempts that did not result in a fatality in that same year. While our communities are making strides in awareness and training on suicide prevention and treatment, the likelihood is high that behavioral health professionals will encounter individuals at risk for suicide. This course gives learners the opportunity to apply knowledge about suicide prevention to assess and intervene with an at-risk adult. By interacting with their client in a simulated therapy session, learners will see how their selection of responses impacts the client’s level of risk and their outcome. Supervisory input is also provided to help guide learners through this simulation, which helps counselors bridge the gap between knowing and doing. The “In Session: Suicide Assessment and Intervention for Adults” course was developed by Monique Kahn, Psy.D., a clinical content writer for Relias, and Kimberly Roaten, Ph.D., CRC, Director of Quality for Safety, Education and Implementation for the behavioral health service line at Parkland Health & Hospital System. It can be found in Behavioral Health Standard and Enhanced packages in the ‘Clinical Skills Application in Behavioral Health’ category in the Relias learning management system.
