Relias Press Room Relias Learning Achieves Milestone with One Millionth BrainSparks® Completion Within First Five Months of Release Published: January 26, 2017 Supplementary learning tool uses “spaced repetition” technique to enhance retention rate of key concepts. CARY, NC, January 26, 2016 – Relias Learning, the leader in online training solutions for the healthcare market, today announced a milestone achievement as users of their Learning Management System registered one million BrainSpark responses within the first five months of introduction. BrainSparks are brief quiz questions sent directly to individuals via email or the company’s mobile application after they have taken a course. The adult learning theory behind BrainSparks is based on the idea of “spaced repetition,” which triggers increased memory retention by enabling the brain to recall information at key times after a concept is first learned. By reinforcing an idea, concepts and information are more likely to be put into practice. Relias clients were quick to recognize the value of BrainSparks. “I personally have answered the questions when they show up in my inbox and appreciate the positive reinforcement when I answer correctly,” explained Joyce Munda, Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. “Topics like HIPAA are well worth being reminded so we are ever cognizant of how a careless moment can have major negative impact on people’s lives.” BrainSparks are sent to clients, free of charge, two, four, six, 30, 32 and 34 days after a course is initially taken. These specific time intervals were developed based on the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, to help strengthen the memory through recall. “We’ve been thrilled by the level of client adoption to BrainSparks” said Ben Johnson, Chief Product Officer of Relias Learning. “Our goal with any product innovation is to improve the quality of care our clients provide, and the rate at which they’ve embraced BrainSparks validates our efforts.” “We started using BrainSparks and saw a dramatic increase in learner engagement,” said Greg Streuly, Training and Instructional Design Specialist at Bethesda Lutheran Communities, an organization that provides services to people with developmental disabilities. “It’s now commonplace for our learners to engage in meaningful conversations about the lessons well after the initial due dates.” Currently BrainSparks is available for many popular courses in the Relias Learning Management System as well as all new and updated courses since May 2016. BrainSparks was launched in September 2016 as part of the roll-out of the company’s mobile app, which also features Pro-on-the-Go® – quick refresher courses designed to be used in the field and on the floor. The Relias Learning mobile app is available for iOS and Android. BrainSparks is also available to clients through the Relias Learning Management System (RLMS).
